Alan Smith's interest in the world of motor racing was sparked by the success of the Mercedes and by the Auto Union 'Silver Arrows' in the late 1930s.
It was with his images from the 1950s that he made his major contribution to this sport, photographing the races at Silverstone, Aintree and Goodwood. On occasion, he travelled abroad to Monza, Berne, and Reims to follow the performances of Grand Prix heroes of the 2½ litre Formula One era, including Stirling Moss, Mike Hawthorn and Juan Fangio.
Alan Smith now lives in Southern England and, despite ill health, he continues to take great shots of sport and travel. An expert on aircraft, his superb photographs of Concorde appear regularly in books and other publications.
