Bee Bartlett is constantly searching for a way to find a balance between the composition of a painting and the physical engagement in the handling of materials as a way of expressing her sensibility.
Her work divides loosely into two subject areas, the first being the study of the figure where an integral part of the practice is the constant use of a sketchpad. She makes rapid, gestural studies of people, which are then used as source material for development into paintings. The intention is to capture a moment and for the paintings to maintain the same immediacy and spontaneity as the original sketch.
Bee Bartlett's new figure pieces are an excellent example of this energetic built up layering of paint.
