New Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious Prints

Posted by Union Art 12/03/2013 0 Comment(s) Art News,

Spring is here, a new season for some new Limited Edition Fine Art Prints. We are pleased to introduce four new prints: a new Edward Bawden, and three new Eric Ravilious prints.

Two Women in a Garden - Eric Ravilious

The two women in question are Charlotte, Bawden’s wife in the deckchair, and Tirzah, Ravilious’s wife, preparing vegetables. This is Brick House in Essex, Bawden's large house and garden which at this point was shared by both couples, all having a hand in its decoration. The women made marbled paper for the house, whilst, as reported by Charlotte in the spring of 1932, Edward and Rav are at Bardfield this week, decorating the Victorian room. They are threatening to paint stags horns and trophies of the chase in suitable positions on the wall, and forget-me-nots and pansies round the fireplace, but I think Rav will keep a discreet hand over Edward's rococo spirit. This is a rare painting,  not only is the subject winsome, reading, and the shelling or pairing of peas, but it is rare too for Ravilious to depict his friends and loved ones.

Caravans – Eric Ravilious

These are actually Fever Wagons - used first in the Boer War, or possibly even earlier in the Crimean War, and then shipped back to Newhaven, Sussex, and parked at the chalk pits near Peggy Angus's house Furlongs where Ravilious was residing. Ravilious asked if he could purchase them, and subsequently made one into a bedroom and the other into a studio, where presumably this haunting work was painted.

Beachy Head - Eric Ravilious

The cliffs of southern England are, of course, iconic of England as a whole - even the name the oldest name for the Island of Britain, may derive from the whiteness of the chalk. This is the lighthouse which, in 1902, replaced Belle Tout. Ravilious is fascinated by the light in this picture, and graphically creates several triangular planes from light, sea and land. The picture was exhibited to acclaim soon after its creation at Arthur Tooth and Sons Gallery in New Bond Street, London, and it was after this exhibition that Ravilious was commissioned as a war artist to paint his now famous series of coastal views.

Tyger! Tyger! – Edward Bawden

A linocut, 1974, in response to William Blake's famous The Tiger Tiger, tiger, burning bright / In the forests of the night, / What immortal hand or eye / Could frame thy fearful symmetry?’. This is an exceptional evocation of a tiger, and one which perfectly resonates with Blake's singular vision.
