Emily Burningham was born in London in 1978. She grew up largely in the city, but also spent a great deal of her childhood visiting the east coast of England and southern France.
All the members of her family are artists, so she was exposed to art and design concepts from a very young age. She took a BA Hons Degree in Ceramic Design from a prestigious London university and is now a professional artist. She describes her inspiration as being “the shapes, colours and patterns of nature” but admires designers and artists throughout the ages, including specifically the design of the 1920s and ‘30s, the fascinating culture and history of Japan, English and French textiles from the turn of the century and ceramics, textiles and furniture from the Arts & Crafts Movement.
In her own work, boldness, simplicity and use of colour are of paramount importance. Whether using forceful block colour or soft delicate hues, getting the combination just right is what she strives for.
Emily Burningham works in a variety of different media and spends a great deal of time visiting antique fairs, junk shops and other places where she might come across odd items which will provide her with inspiration in her work.
