Mairi Aitken was born and educated in Glasgow. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art, graduating in Drawing and Painting in 1962. She taught art for a number of years in a variety of schools in both England and Scotland. While teaching she continued with her own work and after leaving teaching pursued a full time career as a painter. the Paisley Art Institute and the Glasgow Society of Women Artists of which she is an ex president. MairiAitken has exhibited widely’ from Cannes to Glasgow in group and one man shows. She is an artist member and Past president of the Glasgow Society of Women Artists and exhibits regularly with them as she does with the Paisley art Institute where, over the years, she has won a number of prizes. Her paintings are carried out in acrylic and can be found in collections throughout the UK, Europe and the USA. MairiAitken has a lively “painterly” style. She seeks the serendipity factor, be it in the play of light and shadow, people going about their everyday lives, mood and above all “paint doing what paint wants to do!”
